Samba de Roda
The Samba De Roda is the most primitive variant of samba, it dates back to 1860 it is practice in the Ronconcavo Bahiano. It is part of culture of Africans rhythm brought to Braasil, note that the cultural diversity of African race within Brasil was rouge. The slave owner toke slaves from different part of African tribes to separate them to break the connection with the past, where they create a mix of culture what we have today in Brasil.
Together with capoeira and maculele Samba de Roda is a symbol of presence of the african influence in the Brazilian culture. In Bahia Brasil the samba de roda is more present than anywhere else.

The Samba de roda a specific variant of Brazil best known dance and musical form, is domiciled in the Recôncavo Baiano since centuries.
It can be assumed that the urban samba forms – as for example those in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and others States in Brasil – are to be traced back to the traditional forms Samba de roda from Bahia.
There are several versions about the birth of the word samba. One of them claims to be from the words Zambra or Zamba, come from Arabic, having been born more precisely when invasion of the moors to Iberian Penisula in VIII century. Another says it is originating from one of many African Languages, Possibly the Kimbundu, where Sam means give Ba means receive or things falls.
In Brasil, folklorists suggest that the word "samba" came from Kikongo word "Semba", translated as "umbigada" in Portuguese, meaning "a blow struck with the belly button".
In the middle of 19th century, the word samba defined different types of music made by Africans Slaves, when conducted by different types of Batuque, but assumed its own characteristics in each Brasilian States, not only by the diversity of tribes for slaves, and the peculiarity of each region in which they were settlers. Some of these popular dances were known: bate-baú, samba-corrido, samba-de-roda, samba-de-Chave and samba-de-barravento in Bahia, coco in Ceara, tambor-de-crioula in Maranhao, trocada, coco-de-parelha, samba de coco and soco-travado in Pernambuco, partido-alto, Miudinho, jongo and caxambu in Rio de Janeiro, samba-lenço, samba-rural, tiririca, miudinho and jongo in Sao Paulo.
Today there are several types of Samba
Samba De Roda: is Afro Brasilian stile of music and dance it is played with a pandeiro and clapings, in capoeira they play also Berimbau it is the most primitive variant of samba, it dates back to 1860 it is practice in the Ronconcavo Bahiano.
Samba no pé: Is a solo dance that is most often danced impromptu when samba music is played.
Samba de Gafieira: Is a partner dance considerably different than the International Ballroom Samba. It gets the name from the Gafieira - popular urban nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro.
Samba de Pagode: Is is another Samba partner dance that resembles the Samba de Gafieira but has less acrobatic movements and tend to be more intimate. It became a dance style after the appearance of the pagode in Rio.
Samba Axé: It is a solo dance that started in 1990s during the Carnival season in Bahia when the axe rhythm replace the lambada.
Samba Reggae: It also originated from Bahia, it's a mix of reggae beats with Samba drums. Samba Reggae is the second most popular samba style in Bahia, with followers all over Brazil.
Samba rock: It is a playful form of the samba, and it originates in São Paulo.
It can be assumed that the Samba de Roda from the reconcavo Bahiano is the base for all sambas. |
